Music video analysis

  • Here we are representing female gender identity in particular young girls. therefore in this video we have many close ups of her femininity, but not objectifying her as she is young and not presented like that. e.g we have close ups of glamorous nails, eyes and lips with gems.
  • Its not only about gender representation but has the theme that everyone is unique.
  • This has a build up to the actual song, setting up the setting, having cuts between artist and other students, which is a huge contrast. It has that eerie look, building up and the screens go blurry.
  • We have a contrast from the start between the artist (bright and colourful ) and the rest of the students ( all in white) . we also have the dancers in bright clothes against a plain white back ground, focusing on the dancers and their individuality.
  • The video interprets the song literal, having Willow whipping her hair.
  •  Also another layer of interpretation, breaking out and having fun, playing with colour and filling a white room with bright colours.
  • We have performance from the artist in every scene but also dance performance; we have everyone doing the whipping of their hair action and we also have her 5 dancers doing a full choreography, as well as solo dancers battling of in a circle.
  • They have a gradual climax where we get everyone from being dull to expressing themselves through dance to a point even the teachers are going crazy, dance moves become heightened, grandma does splits.
  • We also have a climax of Willow in a plain room, filling this room with colour by whipping her hair, final art piece product
  • They have repetition in the main chorus dance and the repetition in whipping the hair. This lets audience take part as they are able to do the same move.
  • They have stomping which is a popular dance in school where the music video is set.
